Evaluation Question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?
During the whole opening sequence creation process i learnt to use many new forms of technology, especially with the creation stage of the actual sequence.

Editing the opening Sequence
When editing our opening sequence we needed a movie editing software that we could use, and we were stuck with 4 different choices to choose from;
- Sony Vegas 12
- Windows Movie Maker
- IMovie
- Magix Movie Pro Plus
We decided that a questionnaire would be useful as this way we could gather some information on what editing software other people use and which they prefer as this would help us to generate our own decision into which software we would be using. In the end we decided to use Sony Vegas 12.0 as it was the most advanced software out of the four and also the most professional.
It has features such as;

Throughout this topic i have also gained a better understanding of weebly.com (what i use to create this blog). I have learned many features that this website has to offer and also learned alot about how to improve my blogs overall look.
The far image to the right is the options menu on the website editor which allows user to choose specifically what they want to include, whenever they want. All i had to do is drag one of the options anywhere onto my blog in order for it to insert. There are many different special features to use such as;
We used YouTube.com to upload all our drafts, interviews and final product to, this way it could easily be shared with other people. It also meant that we could gather information and feedback from the comments that people left. The like and dislike button also helped us to determine if people liked our work or not.
|
To create the text and some of the effects we used Photoshop Photo editor to customize some parts of the opening sequence. This is a very high end program that has some extreme photo editing features. We made the title's for our opening sequence in Photoshop because it had features that allowed us to give the titles an eerie feeling.
|
I felt that i didn't learn that much using the follwing equipment as i already had a good understanding of the equipment already as i have used them on other products and task before;
|
For our sound effects and music i learnt of a website called www.audioblocks.com which provide users with copyright free music and sounds available to be downloaded, this helped a lot when deciding what music to play as this way we could be sure that the music we were using would be copyright free. We spent some time on this website deciding on the right music to overlay our opening sequence, as we wanted the music to fit the opening sequence, so we searched around for eerie horror music, that's when we eventually came across the soundtrack that is currently in our opening sequence.
Overall after finishing the product i can definitely say i have learnt more about each of the programs we used, my knowledge especially on Sony Vegas 12.0 has increased massively and i can now use it with confidence. I felt that learning all of this will help me to create better content in future products.
Evaluation Question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?
Following from question 4, We asked some of our audience to review our work, so that we could make any necessary changes,
|
We asked some other students to watchour opening sequence and then we filmed their reactions and responses to what they had just seen. They specifically enjoyed the camera angles and editing, however they said that the ending scene needed work. The props we used were to attract the audience in as with the knife this would represent violence and danger, which would appeal to the male gender more than the female. Whereas the rose represented secrecy, Silence and Revenge, this prop would appeal to the female viewers

we discussed this topic on multiple occasions about what suitable age rating we should use

Evaluation Question 3-What kind of media institution might distribute our media product? and why?
A film distributor is responsible for the marketing and distribution of the film. They are the third and final part in the movie creation process. The distributor company determines how many copies of the film should be made and they then show the movie to cinema chains all around the world who may be interested in leasing the movie to show in their cinemas. Once a contract between the two is complete the movie prints are sent to the selected cinemas a few days before release. The movie will then be released for however long the contract says, before it is sent back to the distributors. Most distributors also gain rights to distribute the movie at a later date on services such as DVD, TV and Netflix.
As our production,Marketing and Distribution company we decided to use New Line Cinema as our chosen Company, because this is usually the genre of films they work with. We included their company logo animation at the start of the opening sequence to allow viewers to know who helped with a lot of the movie making processes.

Evaluation Question 2-How does your opening sequence represent particular social groups?
My opening sequence represents social groups in a variety of ways such as Age/Gender/Race/Subculture/social class and an individuals fashion style. Throughout most/nearly all movies we have researched the main female character is always portrayed as an adversary. We decided that we wanted to recreate this effect but in a different way using editing and camera angles.
To photo's (top right) are of our main character She plays the so called 'Villain' in our film. Our actress, Cara Howes, was perfect for this part in our opening sequence because of her characteristics such as her eyes and long dark hair. She is 18 years old and plays a character that is around the age of 24. By choosing her as our actor, allowed us to portray her as a more complex character rather than the standard, typical female villain, By using over the shoulder camera shots and Point of view shots, allowed us to present her in this mysterious way. Compared to female antagonists in Hollywood productions (Photo left), Our character is much different as although she is the villain she doesn't seem that scary/evil from what we see of her, They are both wearing similar dark clothing, nothing too bright as this wouldn't suit the scene appropriately. By dressing the actor in black clothing represents her as a mysterious person and the audience can then identify her as the antagonist this way. |
|
Also our other character that we see at the end of our opening sequence has been created to suit the role of a standard young civilian. The actor that played this role is Betty Gardiner, we believed that she represented the role of the civilian well, due to her past acting roles in a number of television ads. We dressed the her in the clothes that a standard girl of her age would most likely wear.
Evaluation Question 1-In what ways does our opening sequence use/develop or challenge forms and conventions of real opening sequences?
My opening sequence establishes Setting, narrative, genre, characterisation, visual style and ideology throughout, just like many other movies in the mystery thriller genre do. Below is a grid of nine frames that each represent a different aspect of our opening sequence, they are as follows;
The first frame is introducing our opening sequence. The text flashes around the screen and quiet eerie music begins to play. We decided it was best if we showed the Title now rather than at the end because this way the audience start querying what the movie would be about. We decided to use the title write of passage as we thought it suited the mystery thriller genre well. The second frame identifies the main location in which the opening sequence takes place, the use of the mystery person and their desk is to set up the following scenes as they all revolve around the mystery character.
The third frame shows some of the props we used, Props such as White Roses, Bloody Notepad and knives help us to create this mysterious character. We dressed the mystery woman in dark clothing as this matches her personality as well as her dark/hidden identity. This helps to create the audience guessing as to what actually happens in the movie, The fourth frame shows one of our camera styles, it is an over the shoulder shot of our mystery woman at her desk, we did this because it gives the feeling as if the audience was in the room with her. Throughout the opening sequence there are multiple camera angles in which portray the woman as mysterious.
My fifth frame is displaying our font, throughout the opening sequence we don't have much text appearing, however when it does appear it flickers, moving around the screen, We did this because it matches with the music and eerie scenes. In the sixth frame the rest of the movie is set up well as the audience can identify the main character and also have a rough idea about what the rest of the movie is going to be about in someway. From the knife she is holding in the frame tells us about her possible intentions.
The audience can identify the genre easily during the opening sequence, this is down to the use of props throughout, such as the knife and rose indicating there could be some sort of violence hence the partial thriller. The opening sequence gains its mystery genre from the still unknown identity of the woman, we only ever see short, quick shots of her. Obviously the main character in frame 8 is portrayed as an mysterious/dark/secretive woman, whereas the other female character is introduced to use right at the end of the opening sequence for a short time. However when we do see her she is portrayed as a ordinary female civilian with casual clothing. Throughout the opening sequence there aren't that many special effects uses except small scene transitions and text editing, we focused more on camera techniques/styles rather than on special effects.
By comparing our opening sequence to another film of the same genre the characteristics of both are largely similar as they are both using certain settings/camera styles which relate to the genre. The use of weapons as props is heavily common in mystery thrillers with films such as; Se7en, Shutter Island and the shining all featuring a main character using the weapon. We used camera styles that are also most commonly used in this genre such as; POV shot, Over the shoulder shot and extreme close up.

Audience Feedback
|
After we had finished producing our opening sequence we decided to get some extra feedback that we could then analyse at a later date, and we also asked for feedback so that we could get an idea of what other media students thought of our opening sequence. After letting them watch the opening sequence we then asked them some simple questions about our opening sequence so that we could have some detailed reviews of our work.
|
Our Final Opening Sequence
|
After making some changes to the lighting as well as props we have finally finished creating our opening sequence. We also re filmed the final part of our opening sequence. After analysing our audience feedback and re watching the final part we all agreed that this needed to be changed. So we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
|
What equipment did we use?
We created our opening sequence using only a small amount of equipment as we could only work with what we already had. Throughout the whole process we used 2 SLR cameras;
|
Editing our opening sequence
Whilst editing our opening sequence, we realised that the scene needed to be darker, because at the moment the scene was too bright and didn't have the effect we were looking for. So by adding a black and white filter to the scene, immediately made the scene look better as now it seemed to match the Mystery Thriller genre we were aiming for. After showing our draft opening sequence to a small audience we asked for feedback, and the most common piece of feedback we received was that we needed to work on the final shot.
We took these comments into consideration and proceeded to edit the final shot,we started by Reducing the amount of color in the shot as it was too bright, by doing this enabled the audience to see what was actually happening because before some people had trouble seeing what was actually happening in the final moments of the scene. We also decided that, by slowing down the final shot allowed the audience to get a better understanding of what actually happened. Throughout the whole opening sequence we used animations such as jump cuts, dissolves and fades to transfer from one shot to another.

Opening Sequence-Shot List
Write of Passage - (First Draft)
Below is our first full draft of our opening sequence, after watching it back multiple times we have discovered changes that can be made, to improve the overall quality of our sequence will be making some slight changes to the lighting as some shots are brighter/darker than others. We are looking for a constant lighting that isn't too dark that we can't see what is happening however on the other hand we do not want the lighting too bright as we want the villain's identity to still remain unknown.
Filming Schedule
Here is our schedule to film and capture all of our inside shots and outside shots, which will both be held on separate days.
Tuesday 12th April
On this day we shall be capturing 90% of our overall opening sequence, the other 10% is the select few outside shots.
We will be capturing shots such as;
The outside scene takes less time to make/record as we had already been prepared in advance to shoot this scene, also there wasn't as many shots as Tuesday, so the whole overall process won't take too long at all.

On this day we shall be capturing 90% of our overall opening sequence, the other 10% is the select few outside shots.
We will be capturing shots such as;
- Extreme close ups of the villain
- The Villains POV
- High angle shots of the villain sitting at their desk
- Over the shoulder shots of the villain writing, Looking at mirror, getting ready to go out etc..
The outside scene takes less time to make/record as we had already been prepared in advance to shoot this scene, also there wasn't as many shots as Tuesday, so the whole overall process won't take too long at all.
Risk Assessment
When filming inside there isn't that many thinks that can be a risk. We would need to watch out not to trip over the lighting wires and ensure that the lights are not on for extensive periods of time as they could overheat. With our props we need to ensure they are used properly as we do have a knife as a prop. We will ensure that the knife if kept save when not in use instead of just lying around, this way nobody can accidentally get hurt.
The only real risk of outside is the lake which we will be filming near, the lake is fairly deep so we need to ensure that the area we are using around the lake is flat and stable. We will also ensure that everybody takes extra precaution when walking near and around the lake. |
Shot List- Planning
We created this document so that every member of the group was familiar with what camera angles we would we using. This also helped organise our filming as we knew how to take each shot and where it would take place.
Although this was very useful, we did end up making changes to some of the shots. Some we edited slightly, others we scrapped because we agreed that some of the shots didn't really fit in and didn't provide that flow of suspense we were aiming for. |

Props and Costume - Research and Planning
For our opening sequence we also needed to decide what our villain and victim would be wearing. For our villain we wanted to ensure that they suited their surroundings. So because of this we thought dark clothing will fit with the genre well, and will make the villain be portrayed as a mysterious character which is want we want to achieve.
The rose and Flip mirrors will be used by the villain as props to add to her mysterious personality, they will be seen briefly in the opening sequence. Most of the props will have a dark effect to the scene and will reflect the villains feelings and characteristics. |
Location - Research and Planning
After creating a script and deciding what our Opening sequence was going to consist of, we needed multiple possible locations at which we could film some of our shots. This way we could compare each location's pro's and con's and eventually come to a decision on where we would be filming. Below are some examples of where we are thinking of shooting the victim Scene, because it will create an effect that looks like she has been left to die among the shrubs and forestry. The Video on the right is a short clip of the Drama studio, we are very keen to record our mysterious villain desk scene here, All is explained why in the video.
Actor Auditions
After deciding how our opening sequence was going to plan out, we then needed to undertake auditions in order to find an actor which would suit starring in our Opening Sequence. The actors are as follows seen in order;

Opening Sequence Script
The draft script goes with the storyboard and is basically the storyboard in a text format with a lot more information about each scene, This helps us to remember how each scene is meant to occur and also so that we know what we are doing.

Storyboard Creation Meeting
By creating a storyboard it gives us the opportunity to plan our story line onto paper, by discussing it we could decide once and for all how the opening sequence would go ahead. Below is an edited video of our discussion about the storyboard.
Production Company.
For our opening sequence we are going to be using New line Cinema because they produced the movie se7en, which is also where we got most of our inspiration from to produce our opening sequence, New line cinema would also fit well into being our production company as this is usually the genre of films they produce.

Target Audience and the BBFC
The Age rating chart (Shown Left) was created by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in 1912, Previously there were no set age ratings and instead local councils implied their own. When The British Board of Film Classification first released their age rating there were just two advisory certificates. Universal and Adult, Universal being suitable for all and for Adult; some establishments ruled that children must be accompanied by an adult.
Obviously these advisory certificates have changed over the year due to a wide range of genres and movies to watch, and now there is a much wider range of certificates available. For our Opening sequence we will need to state what our age rating will be, we would like to gain maximum viewer potential so we chose 15 as a suitable target audience this way, we can still include relevant detail which can relate to the genre. |
Production Meeting 1 - Discussing our Opening Sequence
Recently We created a questionnaire to ask people so we could get their views on our movie genre and what they would like to see in a typical mystery thriller Opening Sequence. We found that the answers we received from recording this video helped us conclude some ideas of what we were going to include in our opening sequence and also help us reflect back on how popular the mystery thriller genre would be. We thought that it would be necessary to record a production meeting of us discussing our ideas for our Opening Sequence based off some the answers we received. Below is our production meeting edited just to give you an idea of how we decided on some ideas.
Planning and Exploring
The following Blog Update will show you the planning we have been doing for our opening sequence. A few days ago we created a short questionnaire to ask some other students around the school, instead of just writing down their answers we decided to film them, this way we could use this a evidence for planning and look back on this if we needed to. The questions that we asked them were based on our opening sequence and also what they thought about our movie genre that we had chosen, Which is Mystery Thriller by the way. Below is a video of us recording their answers. I will also add the questions included in the video below and why we decided to use these questions.
The Questions used in the video are as follows:
1. What is your Favorite Movie Genre?
2.Would you like to meet The main villain in the Opening scene of a Mystery Thriller?
3.Do you prefer a build up of action, or an action packed movie from the beginning?
4. Do you like the genre mystery thriller at all?
5. In a few sentences what would you like a mystery thriller's opening sequence to look like.
We decided to use these questions in our Questionnaire as we believe that the answers we receive from them will be most beneficial to us. The first and fourth question we all decided would be relevant as from them we could find out how popular Mystery Thrillers are. The second question helped us decide if we should include our villain in the opening scene or not, in the end we decided that we would include quick shots of the villain but the shots would not reveal the villains identity.
Question three was included in the questionnaire because we could then relate our opening sequence to the answers we receive and finally question five was a massive help to us, as from the answers we received we could start to place multiple ideas into a storyboard.

Prop Making and Designing
For our opening sequence, we have decided hat part of i will include a police line up, so for this we designed and made some Number cards that each of the victims would wear around their necks. We are on much more of a strict budget so they had to be made out of cardboard. Below is a video of two members of our group creating these props.
Opening Sequence Analysis 2- The Hurt Locker
|
The first thing that stands out in this opening sequence is that there are no credits, this is very unique as nearly all films have some sort of credits in the opening sequence. Whether that be the cast or the production companies.
Throughout the sequence there are multiple techniques used to create effect, such as; Camera Shake - to show sudden shock/danger and panic as the soldiers run to the suspicious man. Point Of View - There a multiple (POV) shots throughout the scene to make it look like when are looking through the view of the soldiers and suspicious man. Camera Blur - this is used when the soldiers are looking through the scopes of their rifles. |
Opening Sequence Analysis 1 - Se7en
The First shots we see of Se7en are set in what seems to be a either a house or office as there are props which have been used to create a setting and could also be associated with investigations and detective work, linking to the theme of the movie. A high percentage of the shots in the sequence are taken with dark lighting which could represent danger and mystery as we only ever see short clips of the mysterious person's hand.
The opening sequence is edited using a montage format in which all the separate clips are edited together to create a flow.The transitions used throughout the sequence vary however the most common is a short fade to text or a cross fade. |
|
Camera Angles/Shots/Techniques.
Throughout media there are different ways in which the filmer/director can portray what is happening, through the way the camera is positioned/used. We decided to make a short clip on some examples of the most commonly used techniques, Such as; Establishing shot, Mid Shot and close up. These types of camera techniques are used to give the viewer to watch the character from different perspectives.
How does one identify a genre?
A genre is the style/category of a movie, for example an action film will have characteristics of violence, danger and possibly death. We identify a genre by the things that occur within the film itself.
Analysis of DVD Covers.
The main characters are displayed at the front of the DVD cover to draw attention to the viewers.
All of the text and images are center displayed and all the text is fit inside of the boat. Main Characters displayed along with boat, giving the audience an idea of what the movie is about. The line "Nothing on earth could come between them" is a short abbreviation that can sum up the theme/Genre and story line of the movie. The word "Titanic" is centered and stands out from the rest of the other text, which draws attention to the audience. The clothes that rose is wearing could also give us an idea of what time period the movie is based around. The reviews and cast list at the bottom of the cover indicates positive reviews and important information showing the in depth facts about the movie that many audience members may not know. |
The award shown at the top of the poster entices the audience because they now know it is a popular movie.
The film title is laid out in bold, yellow characters in order to stand out. The gun is incorporated into the post to benchmark the genre of the movie, in this case being violence, action and crime. The blinds and low key lighting indicates and adds to a them of mystery and danger. The list of actors are shown in bold characters also, in order to captivate more viewers and sales. Quentin Tarantino who produced the movie is mentioned underneath the title as a reference to the film, this will attract more viewers who are particular fans of his work. The worn out effect on the right hand side makes it look more like a book than a movie cover and the 10 cents icon gives it a comic book kind of look. The main image of the female actor is not centered like usual and she is centered to the right in order to allow space for the cast on the left hand side. |
The contrasting sky in the background adds effect to the image and also sets the scene.
It also relates to the slogan "Every Second Counts" because it shows that sky slowly turning to night and that the main actor doesn't have much time left. With the character pushing against the two rocks it shows his mental and physical struggle in his situation. The Bright Bold letters at the top of the poster attract the audience. The lines "A Triumphant True Story" and "From The Award Winning Director of Slumdog Millionaire" is of an interest to the audience as this way the movie acts as a much more realistic setting. |
Narrative Theory
What is Narrative Theory?, well its a form of storytelling/giving a report of events.There are many people that have theory's of this topic such as Tzvetan Todorov, Claude Levi-Strauss and Vladimir Propp are just a few examples. Today i will be help you to understand their theory's and how their examples link to films.
Vladimir Propp Vladimir Propp was born on April 17th 1895 in St Petersburg. He started to analyse many different texts in his early 20's and eventually came up with his theory. His theory indicates that there were around 7 broad character types in the multiple Texts he analysed. The 7 characters he included were: 1. The Villain (Not liked by many people) 2.The Hero (Usually a victim of something the villain has done) 3.Donor (Helps the Hero in some way). 4..The Lover (Falls for the Hero, their true character isn't clear at the start) 5. The False Hero (Perceived as a good character in the beginning, but everybody starts to question their loyalty to the Hero). 6.The Dispatcher (Sends the hero off, whether this be to confront the villain or to find him/her). 7.The Helper (Helps the hero constantly along his journey). Although he only tested his theory with texts in his era, this theory still applies will a lot of films and texts today. For Example this theory fits well with the movie Shrek |
Tzvetan Todorov Tzvetan Todorov was born on March 1st 1939 in Sofia, Bulgaria. His theory states that in all movies there are 5 main steps, these are; 1. Equilibrium (The first part of the story portrays a happy start, people going on with their normal lives). 2. Disruption (Something will occur that affects the happiness). 3. Realization (Characters realise and try to adapt the to occurrence). 4. http://www.slideshare.net/Katrinabrookes/todorovs-narrative-theory-24244633 |
What is verisimilitude?
Verisimilitude in film is when something is perceived as being or looking realistic. verisimilitude is Enhanced by a filmmaker presenting certain facts of a film's reality. An example of this that i found was that if we were told that at max speed in the worlds fastest Spaceship it would take 40 minutes to get to the moon, you cant then go and show the actor arriving at Pluto in an hour to respond to an emergency.
Another example is that in a superman movie we see him flying, and the ordinary people do not because superman isn't normal. So we believe this, however is somebody started flying in Eastenders we would be confused and not believe this because they are normal.

Preliminary Task
For the preliminary task we had to show the use of the three camera angles and rules we had studied, these were The 180 degrees rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot, we then had to incorporate these techniques into our short clip in which we acted out all three of the rules. If you haven't already check out the three techniques above.
Before we could act out our preliminary task we needed to script it to ensure we all know what roles we were taking and what we were doing.
The Things we had to include in order are as follows:
The Things we had to include in order are as follows:
- Camera angle pointed at main actors feet (Walking)
- Shoulder and head view of actor (Walking)
- Camera angle of actor reaching for the door handle, and beginning to walk through the door ( Match on action)
- Camera angle from the other side of the door of the actor fully walking through.( Match on action)
- Short conversation with another actor (Using the 180 Degree Rule)

The Kuleshov Effect
The Kuleshov effect is a media editing technique, demonstrated by Lev Kuleshov in the 1910's & 20's. The Technique involves a single closeup of an actor showing one expression constantly, then the camera switching to its first object. For example in the video below Hitchcock explains what the Kuleshov effect is. The camera switches to a picture of some cookies, and from this point of perspective the audience can see that the actor thinks to cookies look tasty.This step is then repeated each time with the editor only changing the object, adding the effect that the actor is actually reacting to all these different objects, even though it is the same clip being repeated over and over again.Check out the video below to see this with a better explanation.
Now that you have seen Hitchcock's explanation, here is our take on the Kuleshov effect. Acting in the same way that Hitchcock explained in his video.
